EL PASO, Texas — Three people were killed when a medical helicopter crashed during a training exercise at Fort Bliss, just outside El Paso, Army authorities said.

The Southwest Med Evac helicopter crashed on final approach to a landing zone Friday during a scheduled training session at the McGregor Range, according to a statement Saturday from Las Cruces, N.M.-based Southwest Med Evac, a unit of Addison, Texas-based Omniflight Helicopters.

The company said the three crew members on board were the pilot, William Montgomery of Avondale, Ariz., and paramedics John Sutter of Las Cruces, N.M., and Anthony Archuleta of El Paso, Texas.

Anthony DiNota, president and COO of Omniflight Helicopters, said the cause of the crash was not yet known.

3 killed in medical helicopter crash at Fort Bliss

EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Army authorities say three people died after a medical helicopter crashed at Fort Bliss, just outside El Paso.

Army officials said the helicopter was working in a support role for training missions when the crash occurred Friday night.

Rick Ericson, a spokesman for Omniflight Helicopters says the three killed were the crew of a Southwest Medevac flight, the pilot and two paramedics. Their names have not been released.

Post spokeswoman Jean Offutt told the El Paso Times that the helicopter caught on fire.

Federal investigators including from the National Transportation Safety Board were en route to the scene.

This helicopter is a critical care unit with many of the same capabilities as a hospital ICU

Mother Frances unveils new helicopter

TYLER, TX – Mother Frances Hospital-Tyler launched the first medical helicopter program in the area in 1985. Today, officials with the Hospital unveiled a $7 million critical care helicopter that can carry patients longer distances than any other medical aircraft in the region.

The American Eurocopter EC145 joins TMF's previous aircraft, an American Eurocopter BK117, which, when acquired, was one of the most advanced available.
